I periodically have the thought pop into my head that I would love to live the minimalist lifestyle. Sometimes, the idea flitters out of my mind as quickly as it enters. Other times, I will make a good attempt of de-cluttering and downsizing, only to follow it up with a shopping spree. I am always thwarting my attempts in one way or another.
I read something online a few days ago about a month-long minimalist challenge. For each day of the month, you get rid of a corresponding number of items. The first day of the month, you get rid of one item; the second day of the month, two items; and so on, right up until the last day of the month. By midnight of each day, the items are to be out of your home, whether you throw them away, give them away, or sell them. You can choose how specific you want to be. For example, have a pair of socks you never wear? You can count them as ONE pair of socks or TWO individual socks. Either way, you're disposing of something you don't need or use, helping to simplify your life and your space.
I have decided that I am going to use the month of May and have my own minimalist challenge, but with a few twists. I know that some days- especially later in the month when the numbers get higher- I won't have the time or energy to do any cleaning projects. I added up how many items I would part with if I followed the daily challenge, and it totals 496. Even if there are days that I don't get around to doing the challenge, I still vow to part with 496 things during the month of May. I am also not following the rule about getting the items out of your home by midnight each day. I'm not neccessarily going to throw an item in the garbage and immediately take the garbage out, and I'm not going to go to Goodwill several times a week. I will start a box or boxes for Goodwill and drop them off once I have a decent amount collected. I vow to have everything out of my home by the end of the day on June 1st.
